Playa del Carmen: Bio-Natural

Pita with Chorizo

Pita with Chorizo

In regards to food, Bio-Natural was my second favorite restaurant of the trip. The first time we went, the service was impressively slow which made me hesitant to return, especially since we’d already had an amazing experience at La Senda. We gave it a second chance, though, and I’m glad we did.

I had the Filled Pita with Vegan Chorizo: vegan chorizo on toasted pita bread with black bean stew, tomato and chia sauce and vegan cheese. This dish is seriously awesome. The toasted pita gives it texture but also soaks up the tomato sauce perfectly, and it was just the right amount of food. Sunflower sprouts seem to be pretty popular there and I have no complaints about that! Chris got the Chilaquiles: crispy tortillas with red sauce, onion, vegan cheese and vegan chorizo with a side of black beans. I’ll admit that I order chilaquiles from time to time just because it’s fun to say! It’s a beautiful dish and has a great variety of flavors and textures.

At our second visit, I ordered the Paella: organic rice with vegetables, chickpeas and spices. This dish, you guys. Oh my gosh. First, I love the presentation. They serve it in a cast iron skillet on a slab of wood, and the peas add a nice pop of color. The skillet keeps the dish hot for a long time and I don’t know what spices they put in it, but it’s amazing. The paella I’m most familiar with has seafood in it, so I was thrilled to find a fantastic vegan option at Bio-Natural. And there was plenty to share, thankfully, because Chris ordered a dish with roasted eggplant that ended up looking like a squid and was mushy and tasted like burnt. Three out of four ain’t bad, though, right?
