One Girl, Two Cities

Throwback Thursday – 7.21.1994

journal“Today was a good day” in the words of Ice Cube. I let Sara read my first entries cuz she would end up reading them anyway. Right, Sara? Anyway, today didn’t start out too good. My dad came in at 9:30am to wake me up and tell me I HAD to baby-sit next door at 10:00am. This did NOT please me. I ended up calling Alice at 10 and telling her I would be there as soon as I could.

I watched Adam, Wes & Shelby. Wes’ll be in 5th grade, Adam’ll be in kindergarten, and Shelby’s only about 2 1/2. They’re really good kids.I baby-sat for 3 hours and got $12, which is good pay.

Then this evening, a little after six, I went to Jon’s house. We rented “Who’s the Man?” a really good movie from Mr. Movies. It stars Ed Lover, Dr. Dre (NOT the one who raps), Salt ‘n’ Pepa, Queen Latifah, Ice T, Flavor Flav, Bill Bellamy, Heavy D, House of Pain, Naughty by Nature, and a few other famous rappers/singers. I’ve seen it before on Showtime and told Jon about it and cuz of all the rappers he wanted to see it.

I just remembered that it also starred Kris Kros.

Oh! I haven’t said anything about my pen pals yet. Karen is Chinese, lives in CA, and would be in my grade except she skipped 3rd. I’ve seen a couple pictures of her so I can tell you she has brown/black hair and brown eyes. She writes PERFECTLY. She also has a SORT OF boyfriend. His name is Tony. They get to see each other almost every day cuz of tennis lessons.

I got Karen as a pen pal through a book series called, what else of course, Pen Pals. Karen’s a good pen pal cuz she’s loyal and honest, so I feel comfortable telling her things.

After Karen I got another pen pal: Jessica. I stopped writing to her though cuz I thought she was boring. Jessica became a pen pal because she used to live in Lakeville and we went to JFK together. Then she moved to ND. Oh well.

The third pen pal I got was Elizabeth who now lives in WI. I met her during my only year at Cherry View, 6th grade. She moved at the end of the school year and we decided to become pen pals. We are closer now that we have written fora year than we had when she lived here. (Does that make sense? I hope so.)

Elizabeth has brown hair and brown eyes. She either has glasses or contacts. I’m glad we decided to keep in touch.

My 4th pen pal I also consider my best friend. Carrie now lives in AZ but used to live practically across the street from me. We met through Abby, someone I used to consider a friend, but we just don’t get along. I found out recently that Abby think I “stole” Carrie from her. What a load of CRAP.

Anyway, Carrie has blond/brown hair, I THINK she has brown eyes, and contacts. Carrie has a little white dog, Snowy, & 3 birds: Sunshine, Tammy & Tommy. I watched the 3 birds a couple times while they went on vacation. All 3 have separate cages.

I really wish Carrie hadn’t moved. She was (and is!) a GREAT friend.

Another girl my age, Libby, moved into the house in front of Carrie’s old house but she’s better friends with Sara than me. After Carrie left, Abby and I spent a lot of time together. We bought a 3-piece “best friends” necklace and sent the middle part to Carrie. I’ve got 4 things to remember Carrie besides her letters.

  1. A little box that has her address & the best friends necklace in it.
  2. A black & white picture of me, Carrie and Abby the last time we were together.
  3. A little book on quotes about cats that Carrie gave me when she left.
  4. A neon pink and white frog with a black bow tie that I got with tickets at Circus Pizza the last time we were together.

Well, I don’t feel like writing anymore so I’ll go. BYE!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After writing this, I would love for someone to share what the typical rate is for baby-sitting these days. Something tells me it’s a little higher than $4 per hour for 3 kids.
And don’t you love how gangster I was by quoting Ice Cube? That honestly made me laugh out loud.
I really did love having pen pals, but I remember taking it personally when they weren’t good about writing back. Sometimes I would even writing them letters asking if they still wanted to be pen pals. These days, I would probably just let it go. Karen and I are friends on Facebook; she found me a few years ago after we hadn’t had contact for a long time. As far as I can recall, we’ve met once in person and it was when I was in my early teens. Maybe our paths will cross again at some point.
I hope you enjoyed another entry! From what I can tell, I’m finished providing a lot of background info and will get more into my day-to-day life. Don’t forget to check out The Beth Next Door as well.
Mortified emailed me and let me know to start bookmarking some entries that might work for when they come to town. They haven’t solidified a date, but I’ve been told it’ll be at the end of February so clear your calendars!
One Girl, Two Cities is up for an award! Iโ€™ve been nominated for Best Blogger on Minneapolis Happeningโ€™s Happening List and would love for you to vote for me. *CLICK HERE TO VOTE* Thank you!
    We’re lucky that we don’t really have to pay for babysitters right now (yay grandparents) so I’m curious to know the going rate too! I wonder if I documented what I used to make back in the day! And I had penpals too! I used to meet people when we’d be on vacation and be like, hey, you want to write to me? Crazy stuff! And you are SO gangster. And Mr. Movies!!! Not even Blockbuster but Mr. Movies!! That is classic.
      That’s awesome that you would get people to write to you like that! I think I would’ve been too shy. And yeah, it was all about Mr Movies for awhile. Then we switched to Video Update at some point. Good times, good times. ๐Ÿ™‚
    We are lucky to have a lot of family around so we (thankfully) don’t have to pay a lot of the time BUT when we have its been $10/hour. The thought of getting a sitter for 3 hours for $12 sounds AMAZING. ๐Ÿ™‚ Love your #tbt posts & can’t wait to hear about Mortified!
      You and Beth are both so fortunate. I was thinking $10/hour sounded about right these days. ๐Ÿ˜‰ It’s good to hear you like the posts – I’ll keep em coming!
