There’s a growing community of vegans in the Twin Cities, and I heard through word of mouth that there was a new donut place in Dinkytown called Dude Nutz that makes vegan donuts. Now, I love me some vegan Glam Doll Donuts, but I also like to support any new place with vegan offerings. And with that name… I just couldn’t pass it up.
Turns out, it’s technically Sssdude-Nutz and their tagline is “Keep it sexy. Eat donutz.” This is my kind of place.
Right at the top of their website, they posted: Text us. Call us: 310-292-1873.
I spent some time looking at the other pages, specifically the menu page where I saw nothing marked as vegan. Le sigh.
So I did what they said.
I texted them.
I received a prompt response confirming that they do make vegan donuts but someone had just bought the remaining six of the day. Jerk. Just kidding – hurray for a happy customer! I confirmed that I could preorder a dozen vegan donuts; they just ask for 2 days’ notice, and all “donutz” are $2.25 when you order a dozen or more. You can also order through Foodee or GrubHub. So I placed my order, received an email confirmation, and I waited my two days.
I rushed out the door on my brief lunch break, grabbed a meter within 2 blocks of the shop, and entered the small storefront:
The shop is small but clean and has a few tables so people can dine-in. There’s a huge chalkboard on one wall with various doodles, along with the day’s menu ranging from The Gay 90s to Rick James Bitch. Local artwork adorns other walls. Bradley was incredibly personable and quickly boxed up my order, told me about the varieties, and away I went, back to work to share the sweet treats with my coworkers.
I had received four donuts each of three different varieties, but two of those three were basically the same – just a change in frosting. One was a Donut Trump with coconut shavings on top of each donut, and the others were called I Can’t Feel My Face with crushed Oreos on top. They were all delicious! I started with a chocolate frosting’d I Can’t Feel My Face (pictured at the top of the post) and it was moist and flavorful, not overly sweet. The donut itself is a little more muffin-like than your typical cake or raised donut, but I was more than happy with how fresh and yummy it was.
The Donut Trump (picture above) was similar, but I’m not a huge fan of coconut so I happily let others have most of those and heard no complaints. The only thing I would say is that I would have preferred a little more variety in my selection, but perhaps they’ll have more to offer as business grows. Or maybe I just need to request a better variety next time!
Overall, I’m extremely happy with everything about Sssdude-Nutz, and I can’t wait to order again.
*Update 2/18/2017 — I picked up an excellent selection of donuts today as the menu has expanded since Twin Cities VegFest. This one was full of peanut buttery goodness.
*Update — Sssdude-Nutz now operates as a mobile food truck.
