At the end of March I received an email about ClusterTruck¬†debuting in Minneapolis in May. It’s a food delivery service (that doesn’t actually use a truck), and after confirming they would have vegan options, I signed up as a beta tester. I recently received a follow up email that the window for beta testing was going live was provided a code offering a $15 credit on my first order. Casey from Two City Vegans and I had already planned to meet up for lunch at Glam Doll Donuts because I won a dozen free donuts thanks to an Instagram giveaway, so this seemed like a good opportunity to try ClusterTruck.

ClusterTruck’s menu shows vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options with the click of a button, and I greatly appreciate them for making this easy. Once you click through to see the details of a dish, it’s easily customized by unchecking boxes, and they offer add-ons as well. The food is made fresh in a kitchen, so they’re essentially a delivery-only restaurant.

In the vegan section, they offer a Beyond Meat burger with cashew mozzarella that I’d like to try at some point, along with The Herbivore pizza which comes with vegan mozzarella. I’m assuming it’s Daiya or Follow Your Heart cheese on the pizza, but they don’t specify. Hopefully they’ll add vegan meat at some point; currently, the toppings are spinach, red onions, cherry tomatoes, and black olives.

After browsing the menu a couple times, Casey and I settled on the Gochujang Tofu Bowl ($9.99) and Sesame Peanut Noodles ($6.99). The cost of delivery is rolled into the food price, and you tip the delivery person separately. The ordering process was simple, and you receive a text once your order leaves the kitchen, plus you can track the location of the delivery person (similar to Lyft or Uber if you’ve used those).

Casey and I really enjoyed both dishes. The gochujang sauce in the tofu bowl is spicy, the tofu was prepared well (not too firm but not too soft), and the cucumber slices add a nice crunch. I also like that they use brown rice as opposed to white rice.

The peanut sauce on the noodles dish is creamy, and it’s complemented nicely by the red pepper flakes. The only weird part about this one was that we didn’t even realize the apple slices were apples at first because they didn’t taste like apples. I don’t even know how to describe it; there was almost no flavor at all. I would have rather had more cucumber slices instead.

ClusterTruck provides a packet with a fork, spoon, knife, salt & pepper, and a wet wipe. I don’t like all the plastic, but I’ll reuse the containers the food came in, and next time I’ll ask them to exclude the utensil packet in the order notes.¬†

Overall, I appreciate this service and would order again. The food seems reasonably priced for the quality and delivery, and it’s nice to be able to go right to the vegan options and easily customize orders. I’ll be honest that I didn’t ask if they prepare the vegan food on separate surfaces, and if you have any other questions about specific ingredients, it appears that they’re readily available via text or email.¬†
